Mickey Ward -The Fighter

I watched The Fighter last week and was mildly surprised at how watchable it was. It had an amazing cast and the underdog storyline made it quite an enjoyable watch. Not to mention of course Christian Bale's performance! Although he gives most people the overall impression that he is a bit of a twat no one ever doubts his acting abilities. He is quite possibly one of the greatest actors of our time, a big call to make but just the calibre of performances he has given throughout the years is mind boggling. I was hooked from the moment I saw Empire of the Sun (although we must forgive him being in that awful remake of little women). In my opinion his latest performance as Dicky Eklund is worthy of an Oscar.

The strange thing about this film is that you form an emotional and inquisitorial attachment to the story of Micky Ward which led to me to watch the Ward v. Gatti trilogy after seeing this film. I have never been one to be follower of sports especially boxing so I was surprised myself that I could be so transfixed to the fights as they were being played back to back.

This post is about cats. Cats cats cats. Enjoy.

Anne Hathaway has just been announced as the newest catwoman! I really really like her, she has a certain grace about her which speaks beyond her years. And I like cats

Oh Bertie!

After viewing The King's Speech last night, I am a bit smitten. I loved the entire atmosphere of the film, its tone was perfect for the time especially going into the second world war yet it didn't take the audience away from the main characters. I thought everyone played their part beautifully and I hope that Colin Firth is nominated for an oscar. The only gripe about this film is that it feels they have taken the liberty of exaggerrating King Charles VI speech impediment although it is hard not make a film surround the  King's speech impediement without exaggerrating it. The next gripe is the person who played Winston Churchill made me giggle every time he entered the scene, of which I brought this up at the time of viewing when I turned to the person next to me and asked "do you think the casting directors when trying to cast the role of Winston Churchill were like "okay, we need to cast someone whose face resembles a scrotum.""

The King's Speech

I will reserve judgement until after I have seen this film (but secretly, I think it will be amazing)

Ophiuchus?

Holy Universe! So the Minnesota Planetarium Society has decided that there are to be 13 zodiac signs. The latest edition is Ophiuchus "the snake holder

Capricorn: Jan. 20-Feb. 16.
Aquarius: Feb. 16-March 11.
Pisces: March 11-April 18.
Aries: April 18-May 13.
Taurus: May 13-June 21.
Gemini: June 21-July 20.
Cancer: July 20-Aug. 10.
Leo: Aug. 10-Sept. 16.
Virgo: Sept. 16-Oct. 30.
Libra: Oct. 30-Nov. 23.
Scorpio: Nov. 23-29.
Ophiuchus:* Nov. 29-Dec. 17.
Sagittarius: Dec. 17-Jan. 20.
* Discarded by the Babylonians because they wanted 12 signs per year.
Before I was on the cusp of Leo/Virgo but now I am a certified Leo. However some people might not be happy with these new findings. In particular my boyfriend who was Sagittarius and is now a Ophiuchus. Since this is a new sign in astrology there is speculation over what triats this sign might have. I did a bit of googling and found these starsign traits of Ophiuchus

-Seeker of peace and wisdom
-Attractor of good luck and jealousy
-Interpreter of dreams
-One who reaches for the stars
-Wearer of plaid?? (haha, this would have to be the best trait for a starsign!)

Sunday Morning

The weather this morning is neither overcast nor sunny. It is a weird mix of both making me feel at extremely relaxed and listening to the girl from Ipanema on repeat.

This song always reminded me of Gisele BĂ¼ndchen and funnily enough she has her own line of shoes called  Ipanema Gisele BĂ¼ndchen with the footwear company Grendene. I bought a paid of these shoes in Singapore, however they didn't stand up to all the walking/shopping I did over there and broke by the time I came back to New Zealand.

The National

I went to see The National tonight. Feeling sleepy from an extremely long but nonetheless good day, their lyrics just made me think about zombies and vampires.

Lazy Blog Post

I know it is extremely lazy of me to merely post pictures and not have anything witty or intelligent to include but it is going to be one of those days that allows such frivolous behaviour. enjoy :)

Christopher Kane Resort 2011 Collection

The only time I like to blog about fashion is when it takes my breath away and this collection by Christopher Kane has certainly done just that. The prints. THE PRINTS! Oh how can I even begin to describe them which is why I have provided pictures below so you can see for yourself.
One day I hope to be able to afford clothes like these so I can wear the material essence of the ephemeral universe on my shirt.

Purple Editor and Artist Miltos Manetas Wander the Virtual Desert

The above video is Olivier Zahm espousing the great power of the Internet and the ability to share and expand. I really like the one above and way they are shot walking through the streets and with their convesation dubbed over. I like to see people getting all 'socrates' with it. Although the below video is a bit of laugh due to his declaration of hatred for all bloggers. Although I can see his point. Fashion bloggers do seem to be taking over not just the virtual realm but in reality as well.

Egon Schiele

This portrait of Max Oppenheimer is my favourite of Schiele's work. His use of colour make the subjects look sickly and ironically it was the Spanish flu which took Schiele's life.

David Lynch video contest winners

I am blown away by these two amazing video clips. Both as equally creepy as the other.

This first one is directed by Arnold de Parscau and described as “A little boy is having dinner with his family.”

This next one is my favourite of the two. The song is really getting under my skin and the video has excellent symmetry. Directed by Tamar Drachli and described as  “A man obsessed by the woman that left him tries to bring her back through the remote control”

My selection from the 50 most badass moments in art history

Nick Schonberger, the mind behind curatedmag.com put together the list of the 50 most badass moments in art history. I found this on complex.com, and decided to choose my personal favourites from the list and having minored in art history at university I found that the 50 featured were apt yet there was still a lot more that could have been chosen but then again this was a list of the most "badass" moments and the definition on that itself seems to vary

Andy Warhol's soup can was a pretty badass thing to do in the 1960's. The only problem I always seem to get hungry when I look at these soup cans!
Damien Hirst is a modern day badass because by just putting his name to formaldehyded animals he can earn millions.

John Cage was responsible for the fluxus movement similar to that of the Dadaist movement in which Duchamp was one of the pioneers. This manifesto was pretty badass and shook up the contemporary art work in the mid 20th Century. I also love John Cage because of his 4' 33'' which is a piece of music which can be adapted to any instrument the thing is you cannot play that instrument for 4 minutes and 33 seconds. I find this such a revolutionary connection between art, music and nihilism (sung in julie andrews style: these are a few of my favourite things)
Just as it is stated in the countdown Manet paints a hooker. That was pretty badass for the time.
I first learnt about the guerilla girls when I first learnt about the word; feminism. And I have been a guerilla girl at heart ever since. These girls burst onto the scene in the mid 80's and are known for wearing gorilla masks and juxtaposing gorilla heads on images of females in the media which not only makes one think again about how females are portrayed but helps deviate from the mediated norms of society.
Chris Burden gets his friend to shoot him from 5 metres away in 1971. Nothing is more badass then getting shot. This guy did it before everyone; fiddy cent, jackass etc.
Marcel Duchamp's "Fountain" 1917 was listed at 3 on the most badass list. I definitely agree with this placing. As in 1917 was indeed very badass of Duchamp to submit a urinal into an exhibition under the name of R. Mutt which is crudely signed around the base.
In my mind this would have to be the most badass thing an artist can do. Cut off your ear and send it to a prostitute. Not only was Van Gogh incredibly talented and suffered a life of hardship but he also ever so slightly resembles my boyfriend which of course gives him an instant one up over the rest in the list.
