Darkside

I have moved to the darkside! I now will be using tumblr until further notice. I may change my mind and come back to blogspot in the distance or near future. The internet is such a fickle thing.

Set a place for the Big Mac

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder or in this case the holder of the Big Mac.

Odd Future

Pitchfork posted a comprehensive article on the new rap kids in town Odd Future. Check it out here!!
I'm loving their ballsy approach to music in the this modern age. With the increasing publicity of the private many people are becoming increasing censored whereas these guys have a no holds barred approach. For an example of this check out Tyler the Creator's twitter page. http://twitter.com/fucktyler

Also talking about odd future gives me a chance to post this video clip about the swagger wagon. Coming from a sociological background I really have to bite my tongue and not go into depth on this one but hopefully everyone can see the multifaceted tones that advertising like this exudes. Although it definitely has a certain epic lol factor.

Lanvin Luv

I am absolutely besotted with the latest Lanvin Fall 2011 collection. Above are a few of my favourites. There is such a strong influence of Jodorowsky in this collection and I hope that this was the source of inspiration because his films are amazing. Here is an image from Holy Mountain and El Topo to give you an idea of the imagery Jodorowsky weaves into his psychedelic cine-mastery.

The level of mysticism held in both these films and in the Lanvin collection is through these big floppy hats. They mask the face and give a level of secrecy and intimacy. Not to mention the 70's vibe through the earthy colours and cut.

Love this look.

I love this one particular look from the Dolce and Gabbana a/w 11/12 collection. If it wasn't for the way the pants and jackets were cropped then this could come off looking like a tranny zoot suit but the way that it looks in motion here is just pure bliss. Who would have thought pinstripe could go with animal print?

New Black Lips Video

I don't know how I feel after watching the new Black Lips video. Part of me loves it merely because it is the Black Lips but then the other part of me is not so fond. This other part of me thinks that the video is way too hipster for my liking and the fact that they feature the Vivian Girls prancing round in their underroos just simply makes me mad. Partly because the Vivian Girls are hacks, partly because of my love of yoghurt and partly because of my jealously of not being able to travel the world on awesome boats with good looking people. Oh yeah and the song is decent enough, I guess.

The Golden Dawn! Wednesday 2nd March!

Photobucket

This Wednesday will be the DJ debut of "Shady and the Tramp" as The Golden Dawn situated between Ponsonby Road and Richmond Road. Here is a blurb that Mister Crawley was nice enough to write for us.

"Ladies and hounds... introducing the cutest pair of DJ mutts you ever will see. They just love getting their paws on dirty rock'n'roll, rascally country, and the swinging sounds of yesteryear. Bow WOW. Woof. "

How Relevant Is bFM In 2011?

Although I have yet to read the Metro article on the relevancy of Bfm it does give me great delight to know like-minded people out there share the same anguish I do about this so called "student" radio station. After the appointment of Manu to Bfm it seems as if things went from bad to worse. This is some who used to programe direct Mai Fm! A station I thoroughly enjoy listening to but for completely different reasons. The fact that he has put these young stupid "indeh" kids on the radio is beyond rational thought. I let the radio station know this via their txt message service that is suppose to be confidential and to my dismay the presenter at the time read out my txt and my mobile phone number and asking listeners to send derrogatory txt messages to my number. Along with this being completely unacceptable and also illegal in regards to the Broadcasting Standards Authority, I emailed Manu about this and it took him over three days to reply! His reply was unsatisfactory and I later heard that he asked who I was to other Bfm and then asked if I was hot!? In hindsight I should have taken it to the Broadcasting Standards Authority just so I could have wiped the smile of that smug bastard's face.

Christchurch Earthquake

When such a devastating natural disaster happens in a small country like New Zealand, there becomes this immense sense of community. Partly because it helps people grapple with the lives lost and the destruction that has occurred but also because New Zealand is a relatively new country in terms of the world’s timeline so therefore we still have many firsts to experience. Yesterday, Tuesday the 22nd of February, New Zealand experienced a few firsts: the first time a national state of emergency has been declared and the first time so much history and heritage has been destroyed in one place at one time. Christchurch was once known as being the most English city outside of England but now much of this beautiful heritage architecture has been devastated. We live in a nation where two degrees of separation is a reality; everyone in New Zealand has some ties one way or another to Christchurch and, with such a large number of lives lost, it means that everyone is affected. One can only offer their thoughts and deepest sympathies to all the families who have lost loved ones and those who are still waiting on the rescue of the 300 still missing.

Please give generously to this appeal! Every cent counts.

"Red Cross launches appeal
New Zealand Red Cross has launched the "New Zealand Red Cross 2011 Earthquake Appeal" to support those affected by the recent Canterbury earthquake.
All funds will be used towards the New Zealand Red Cross response to the disaster, including transport and provision of goods. As weeks go by, different needs will be identified and Red Cross, there for the long haul with your help, will be meeting them.
A 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit the Canterbury area at 12.51pm on February 22. The quake, approximately 5km underground and located 10km south east of the city has caused wide spread damage, bursting sewage lines, damaging buildings and homes, cutting power and telephone lines to many areas of the city. Things of late cont.

The Strokes new song? Why? You would think that after such a lengthy hiatus from creating music together that they would have new and exciting things to bring to the collaborative creating table. Instead this sounds tired and most of all boring. All though this is only the first release from the their comeback album so one shouldn't be quick to judge and in all fairness the rest of the album could be quite good but then this leads me to my next point, why did they have to release such a shitty boring song as their first single. I will let you be the judge and have a listen below.

Things as of late...

I have been trying to watch all the films nominated for Oscars so I can make an informed decision on whom I think should win however this has proven difficult when the price of going to the pictures is so expensive! It costs around $16.50!! That's more than what I earn an hour. And the allure of the cinemas is not what it used to be, there is no atmospheric ceilings, no plush velvet curtains and certainly no Moorish interior designs, instead just sterile prepackaged movie theatres popping up in every mall and smelling like toddlers up chuck, sugary syrup and stale popcorn. However nothing could keep me away from seeing the Coen brothers' adaptation of True Grit. I had heard all about the hype so I tried hard to go in there with a mind bereft of bias. However I left the cinemas fully converted to the Coen western. It was simply amazing. Some people think that there should have been more violence as the trailer may have preluded to but I think that this would have been unnecessary. For myself, it was the dialogue that made it wonderful and the way that Jeff Bridges played a harden U.S. Marshall yet with still with some 'Dude'-like qualities.

50's Cats

I found this amazing collection of photos via one of my favourite cat blogs catsparella. From the looks of it, it was a casting call for Edgar Allen Poe's "The Black Cat".

Causes

I just created a page on facebook regarding the Auckland University policy of having to take two papers outside of your degree known as general education papers. Not only are these a complete waste of time they are waste of money. Like this on facebook and hopefully something can be finally done about this time wasting policy.

One Tree Hill

One thing that I have always been at odds with is One Tree Hill. I just simply don't understand it. Yeah, yeah it's a television programme involving teenage drama and yaddah yaddah. BUT DOES IT HAVE TO BE SOOOO BORING! At least Dawson's Creek had van der geek, Suri's mom and Michelle Williams. Have any of the cast gone onto do something worthy of an oscar nomination? hmmmmm I didn't think so.

P.s. Auckland used to have a place called One Tree Hill because it was a hill with only one tree on it. They cut it down due to it being a hazard of some sort. They still call the hill One Tree Hill. This story reminds me of the show. Is there even a one tree hill? It is so boring the specifics get lost on me. Maybe they should rename the show and the hill in auckland (N)One Tree Hill. Or just cancel it all together either or is good with me.

Mickey Ward -The Fighter

I watched The Fighter last week and was mildly surprised at how watchable it was. It had an amazing cast and the underdog storyline made it quite an enjoyable watch. Not to mention of course Christian Bale's performance! Although he gives most people the overall impression that he is a bit of a twat no one ever doubts his acting abilities. He is quite possibly one of the greatest actors of our time, a big call to make but just the calibre of performances he has given throughout the years is mind boggling. I was hooked from the moment I saw Empire of the Sun (although we must forgive him being in that awful remake of little women). In my opinion his latest performance as Dicky Eklund is worthy of an Oscar.

The strange thing about this film is that you form an emotional and inquisitorial attachment to the story of Micky Ward which led to me to watch the Ward v. Gatti trilogy after seeing this film. I have never been one to be follower of sports especially boxing so I was surprised myself that I could be so transfixed to the fights as they were being played back to back.

Oh Bertie!

After viewing The King's Speech last night, I am a bit smitten. I loved the entire atmosphere of the film, its tone was perfect for the time especially going into the second world war yet it didn't take the audience away from the main characters. I thought everyone played their part beautifully and I hope that Colin Firth is nominated for an oscar. The only gripe about this film is that it feels they have taken the liberty of exaggerrating King Charles VI speech impediment although it is hard not make a film surround the  King's speech impediement without exaggerrating it. The next gripe is the person who played Winston Churchill made me giggle every time he entered the scene, of which I brought this up at the time of viewing when I turned to the person next to me and asked "do you think the casting directors when trying to cast the role of Winston Churchill were like "okay, we need to cast someone whose face resembles a scrotum.""

Ophiuchus?

Holy Universe! So the Minnesota Planetarium Society has decided that there are to be 13 zodiac signs. The latest edition is Ophiuchus "the snake holder

Capricorn: Jan. 20-Feb. 16.
Aquarius: Feb. 16-March 11.
Pisces: March 11-April 18.
Aries: April 18-May 13.
Taurus: May 13-June 21.
Gemini: June 21-July 20.
Cancer: July 20-Aug. 10.
Leo: Aug. 10-Sept. 16.
Virgo: Sept. 16-Oct. 30.
Libra: Oct. 30-Nov. 23.
Scorpio: Nov. 23-29.
Ophiuchus:* Nov. 29-Dec. 17.
Sagittarius: Dec. 17-Jan. 20.
* Discarded by the Babylonians because they wanted 12 signs per year.
Before I was on the cusp of Leo/Virgo but now I am a certified Leo. However some people might not be happy with these new findings. In particular my boyfriend who was Sagittarius and is now a Ophiuchus. Since this is a new sign in astrology there is speculation over what triats this sign might have. I did a bit of googling and found these starsign traits of Ophiuchus

-Seeker of peace and wisdom
-Attractor of good luck and jealousy
-Interpreter of dreams
-One who reaches for the stars
-Wearer of plaid?? (haha, this would have to be the best trait for a starsign!)

Sunday Morning

The weather this morning is neither overcast nor sunny. It is a weird mix of both making me feel at extremely relaxed and listening to the girl from Ipanema on repeat.

This song always reminded me of Gisele Bündchen and funnily enough she has her own line of shoes called  Ipanema Gisele Bündchen with the footwear company Grendene. I bought a paid of these shoes in Singapore, however they didn't stand up to all the walking/shopping I did over there and broke by the time I came back to New Zealand.
